The SMOU Family Connection held in October saw a total of 80 members and their family members who attended the event. Members joined in the games, lucky draw and enjoyed the show put on by the magician.
Some 61 deserving recipients received bursaries, scholarships and book awards from SMOU, Wavelink and NTUC U care fund. A total of S$ 27,550 was presented to these recipients this year. Since 1982, SMOU has presented more than $1.4 million to more than 3,100 recipients
SMOU welcomes the coming into force of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC) on 20th August. The union believes that this new legislation has the potential to make a genuine difference to the lives of seafarers.
Today, the International Labour Organizations (ILO) Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, (MLC, 2006) will enter into force in the first 30 States to ratify the Convention, with other ILO Member States scheduled to bring it into force over the next 12 months.
SMOU continues to support the young talents of the local maritime industry and handed out two scholarships to deserving recipients at the MaritimeONE Scholarship Awards Ceremony held at Sheraton Towers Singapore.
