International Labour Organization (ILO)

Like the International Labour Organization (ILO), SMOU believes that Work is central to people's well-being. In addition to providing income, work can pave the way for broader social and economic advancement, strengthening individuals, their families and communities. Such progress, however, hinges on work that is decent. Decent work sums up the aspirations of people in their working lives.

The main aims of the ILO are to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection and strengthen dialogue in handling work-related issues.

SMOU played an active role by working together with the ILO, affiliates and industry partners to implement the ILO Maritime Labour Convention, a framework convention which aims to provide seafarers with a Simple, Fair, Safe & Easy to Understand minimum international maritime standard and comprehensive social protection.

SMOU’s General Secretary, Mary Liew is elected as Deputy Member in the Governing Body since 2014.
