National Trades Union Congress (NTUC)

The SMOU has been affiliated to the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) since December 1970. The NTUC is a national federation of trade unions of workers in the industrial, service and public sectors. As at 2012, it has 61 trade unions and 14 associations affiliated to it.

Collectively as a partner of the Singapore Labour Movement, SMOU works together with NTUC to protect the interests of those in the labour force, in the areas of Work, Live and Play. This partnership extends to national initiatives including Lifelong Employability and the Skills Redevelopment Programme.

SMOU members also benefit through heavily subsidised and discounted consumer goods and lifestyle services, through the NTUC Co-operatives.

SMOU’s Emeritus General Secretary, Mr Thomas Tay, served as NTUC Vice-President from 1998-2011.

SMOU's General Secretary, Ms Mary Liew, was elected as part of the new 21-member NTUC Central Committee to serve a four year term from 2011-2015 in December 2011. Additionally, she was appointed by the President of Singapore as a Nominated Member of Parliament, representing the labour movement in February 2012 to August 2014.

In October 2015, Ms Liew was elected as NTUC President, the 2nd woman to be elected after Ms Diana Chia. Her term will be from 2015 to 2019.
