8 December 2011 – The Executive Secretary of the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU), Ms Mary Liew, has been elected into the Central Committee of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) earlier today.
The NTUC Central Committee, comprising 21 elected members, is the highest decision-making body of Singapore’s labour movement.
SMOU’s General Secretary, Mr Thomas Tay, had been elected into the NTUC Central Committee since 1991 and was serving as the NTUC’s Vice-President since 1998, until he made the decision to flow-on, to give younger unionists the opportunity to serve.
Ms Liew would like to express her sincere appreciation to Mr Tay saying “SMOU GS Thomas Tay has been a very vocal unionist who has championed the cause of not only seafarers, but many other workers at the national level. Our SMOU GS has been an inspiration to many with his commitment and dedication to the labour movement”.
She also thanked the leaders of the NTUC Central Committee, who had chosen to flow-on, for their service to the labour cause.
As a new member of the NTUC Central Committee, Ms Liew will continue to be the voice of not only seafarers, but also the women and the workers in the labour movement.
