Students will undertake six months of pre-sea training, followed by 18 months of shipboard learning at sea before returning to complete a four and a half month preparatory programme and two months of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) courses.

The programme will end with the Class 3 Deck Officer Certificate of Competency (CoC) examination assessed by the Maritime Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

The certification will qualify them to work onboard international vessels. At their first briefing, held on 17 September 2010 at the Wavelink Building, Wavelink Maritime Institute (WMI) Course Commander, Capt Menon, delivered a short briefing to set the pace for the TNTA programme and to facilitate administrative matters.

Besides giving an overview of the programme schedule and training modules, WMI set the ground rules at the onset with regards to core values such as good habits, exemplary behaviour and obligations as a deck cadet under the TNTA programme. The 3rd run of TNTA programme, lasting 30.5 months, conducted by WMI will kickstart its first phase at 10 Winstedt Road, (formerly Monk’s Hill Secondary School).

Thanks to Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA), SMOU, Employment and Employability Institute (e2i), Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) and shipping companies who provided the funding which included training allowances and stipend during the period of the programme, these young cadets are given a chance to pursue seafaring careers. Under WMI’s capable hands, the TNTA programme will transit safely and efficiently as the 3rd batch of TNTA cadets begin their journey together.
